Every picture tells a story

“Images of Haverhill” the annual exhibition of the Haverhill Local History Centre will be on show in Haverhill Arts Centre Bistro from Friday 7 January to Saturday 2 April 2005.

This exhibition is a selection of photographs made by members of the Haverhill and District Local History Group from their archive of over 6,000 images. Many of the photos on display will be new to the public and provide a glimpse of different aspects of life in Haverhill’s past. Photos include local people and areas of the town that have changed a lot over the year, including The Meadows.
A Local Heritage Initiative grant of £13,470 was given to the Local History Group in July 2004 to help preserve this treasure trove of photographs and increase local people’s awareness collection. The exhibition shows some of the activities financed by the LHI grant This includes the conservation of important photographs in the collection and the work done by Year 6 of Chalkstone Middle School, as part of their study of Victorian Haverhill. Roy Brazier, Chairman of the Haverhill and District Local History Group, says, “This is a great opportunity for local people to come and see new pictures of old Haverhill. There is much more history here than often people realize! We are delighted that we are able to preserve these photographs for future generations. However, without the Local Heritage Initiative Grant we wouldn’t have been able to have done this so we are very grateful to have been awarded it.”

Computers linked to St Edmundsbury's website and to files of information about the Cattle Market redevelopment in Bury St Edmunds are being made available to the public in the reception areas of our council offices from Monday 24 January.
The Cattle Market files will include background information on issues such as car parking, impact management, design, project management and procurement. Other Cattle Market information, such as Cattle Market Redevelopment Working Party, Cabinet and Council reports, is already available on the website, along with press releases and the Town Centre Newsletter which is emailed to a wide range of groups and individuals.
Information which is commercially sensitive, draft documents and those which are not owned by St Edmundsbury will not be available for public viewing. Access to the computer is free and there will be a small charge for printing information, or supplying it on disk or CD. Alternatively, people can ask for specific documents from the files to be emailed to them.
The computers can also be used for free access to our website which holds a wide range of information and can also be used for paying bills for items such as Council Tax, business rates, licences, hiring public halls and building control fees.
Appointments can be booked for sessions lasting up to two hours or people can just turn up and use the computers any time the council offices are open if they have not already been booked. The computers are available from 9am to 5pm Mondays to Thursdays and 9am to 4pm on Fridays in the Borough Offices Lower Downs Slade, Haverhill.

St Edmundsbury's new recycling scheme has proved to be a winner.

Research was carried out last year to study local people's recycling habits and to find out their views about the new three-bin scheme. Councillors will hear the results at the Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday 25 January.
Waste analysis work has shown that St Edmundsbury achieved the highest collection of compostable waste in the county (68%) and managed to capture over 90% of all paper and card through the blue bin scheme.
St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath also diverted nearly 50% of their total waste (in terms of weight) to recycling and composting. This means that only half of residents' total rubbish is now going to a landfill site. This result is even better than Daventry which recycles 43% and is considered to be one of the best performing councils in England. Local residents are also happy with the new scheme, with 81% saying they are just as satisfied as they were before or think the new service is even better.
