New Voluntary Centre Opens
Voluntary groups in Haverhill now have good facilities to help them help others. The CAB, Volunteer Centre, HAVO, HAMS and Three Counites Transport are now based at the council offices in Lower Downs Slade. There is a lift in the building and a shared reception. I have followed this project from the start and despite the difficulties along the way it is great to see such good facilities in Haverhill.

Still Time To Apply For Core Funding
Voluntary organisations in the borough who would like to apply for core funding for 2005/6 as part of St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s grants scheme have until Monday 25 October to send in their application forms.
St Edmundsbury offers financial assistance to a wide range of local organisations to help deliver services, or to help others deliver services, across the borough.
Following a wide ranging consultation exercise, a new grants policy was approved by full council in September and under this new policy all applications will be assessed on how an organisation will contribute to St Edmundsbury’s priorities and the projects’ sustainability.
New grant application packs are available by calling 01284 757065 or by logging onto www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk. These contain a copy of the grant policy, application form, draft funding arrangements, dates of grant panel meetings and details of other organisations which may be able to offer assistance. All existing partner organisations which have received funding in 2004/05 will automatically receive a pack. Applications for project funding will be considered throughout the year.

Students Speak Out At Sam Ward
I recently attended Sam Ward Upper School to join a panel to answer questions from students. The panel was made up of representatives from local business, press, education and politics.
Among the questions asked were; Why does Haverhill not have a rail station? What is the point of a by-law banning drinking in public? Should the legal age for sex be reduced from 16?
The students had prepared for this debate by discussing issues of democracy. After the questions were finished there was a vote for representatives on the school council.

New Tennis Courts At Sports Centre
Haverhill Tennis Club has moved to new courts on the sports centre site. This move was the result of a partnership between St Edmundsbury Council and the tennis club. If you are interested in trying out the new courts you can hire them through the sports centre or join the tennis club.

Since Suffolk County Council took over responsibility for roads in Haverhill at the end of last year a lot of work has been going on. Two major pieces of work that you should notice over the coming months are:
Traffic calming measures on Chivers Road area.
There will be traffic islands, chicanes and new road alignments to slow the traffic along Chivers Road.
Pavement Improvements
After a large scale inspection of paths in Haverhill the County Council are committed to a two year plan to bring our paths up to a higher standard. The work has already started a will take place in many areas around town. The worst paths will be brought up to standard over the two years.

Haverhill.blogspot.com Returns
The original Haverhill weblog is back. The service stopped after a rather quick decision to move house.
Over the next couple of weeks I will try to catch up on the latest happenings, in Haverhill and Haverhill Town Council, over the summer.
