Clear Up the Approach to TownHaverhill councillor Gerry Kiernan has called on St. Edmundsbury Council toclear up the old Haverhill to Cambridge road on the approach to the town atthe first roundabout at the start of the by-pass.The old road has been filled with rubble since councillor Kiernan called forit to be blocked up to prevent travelers from parking their caravans there. It is now over a year since St. Edmundsbury blocked the old road and agreedto landscape the area.Councillor Kiernan said "Putting the rubble there has worked well but thearea now really needs landscaping. I know the council has been waiting tofind some topsoil from other works but this is a major entrance to the ownand it is important that it gives a good impression to visitors. Thelandscaping needs to be completed by the growing season this spring, this will also coincide with work starting on the sculpture planned for the adjoining roundabout. The sculpture will be a real landmark for the entrance to the town we need to ensure the whole area is attractive.

Home Secretary Praises Haverhill AchievementsIn a pamphlet produced last week Home Secretary David Blunkett praisedachievements by councils and community groups in Haverhill. The HomeSecretary's booklet Active Citizens, Strong Communities calls forindividuals to work together to enhance their communities and calls forcouncils and other authorities to support communities to enable them to worktogether. The Home Secretary uses examples of where communities have come together inlarger urban areas but cites Haverhill as an example of a smaller town wherelocal groups have worked successfully together. The pamphlet talks about the period 1995-2000 when a real turn around tookplace in Haverhill's fortunes with reductions in unemployment and crime andwhen great influence by local groups led to a big increase in investment inthe town.Haverhill councillor Gerry Kiernan who was Borough Council leader during thetime said "We really did manage to involve many local groups in making thecase for new investment in Haverhill, we attracted new social housingincluding the Cangle refurbishment, we rebuilt the bus station, provided anew all weather pitch, increased funding for the arts centre, brought in newroad safety measures, invested in reducing crime and much more. To achievethis we worked with local groups including the elderly, youth groups, healthusers, police and many others. During this time we won several awards in aBest Practice Award from the Prime Minister, I guess it was the nationalawards that brought us to the Home Secretary's attention".The pamphlet Active Citizens, Strong communities is available on-line at:http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/comrace/civil/activecitizenshipcentre/or by typing the title into Google.
