Pick up the phone and vote for Parkway!

A dedicated community group working to improve their environment and provide an important educational tool for schools have beaten stiff competition to be short-listed for a windfall of lottery cash.

Parkway Community Association now needs the help of everyone in the borough to make sure their bid for £50,000 of Big Lottery Fund money is a success. For on Tuesday, 14 November, the group’s plans to dramatically improve Haverhill’s Castle Playing Fields will go head-to-head with another project on the People’s Millions section of ITV’s Anglia News. Viewers will then phone or text in and the scheme with the most votes will be awarded the funding.

If they win the public vote, Parkway Community Association will use the cash to extend the Castle Playing Fields fish pond, know locally as the Newt Pond. The area around the pond will also be tidied, facilities for fishing will be improved and new landscaping and shrubs will be planted. A dedicated wildlife area will also be created. The project has been called “Angles Return.”

Material dug up to create the extra pond capacity will then be recycled to create a terraced “amphitheatre” which can be used as an outside classroom and educational tool for children from the three schools which border the park. It is hoped the project, which would take place with the help of St Edmundsbury, would encourage more people to use the playing fields for recreation.

Denise Moulds, Secretary of the Parkway Community Association, said:

“Having been short-listed, the next stage is to publicise this project widely. ITV will be filming up on Castle Playing Fields on 3 November at 2pm so as many people as possible are needed to be present.”She added:

“The actual broadcast will be on Anglia News at 6pm on 14 November when the public will be asked to vote for their chosen project between 9am and midnight. The more votes we get, the more likely we are to win. Please tell as many people as possible as this will give Haverhill a much-needed boost.”

Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Portfolio Holder for Resources and Community Development on St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said:

“The Parkway Community Association has been set up for some time now and has worked tirelessly to improve its green environment. I would encourage everyone in the borough to pull together and vote for this project as it will have a major impact on the local community by transforming the area.”

The bid for funding by Parkway Community Association is one of eight entries from the region to compete for the cash after making it through to the finals from a total of 40 applications.

If the project does not win its head-to-head battle on 14 November, it still stands a chance of winning funding during Friday’s Anglia News, when the highest placed loser will be announced.

Works postponed to avoid Christmas rush

The improvement scheme planned for Haverhill’s Jubilee Walk has been postponed until January to ensure trade is not disrupted during the run up to Christmas.
A decision was taken to review the timetable for works after St Edmundsbury Borough Council was approached by several retailers and Haverhill’s Town Centre Manager Nick Martin. It was felt the project would need to be complete by 1 December to avoid any impact on trading, but technical delays forced a rethink.
The project, which will see around £460,000 spent on installing new seating, handrails and bus shelters and on landscaping and resurfacing work, will now begin in January and should take around two months to complete.

Cllr Jeff Stevens, Deputy Leader of St Edmundsbury and Chairman of the Haverhill Area Working Party, said:
“A successful Christmas trading period is essential for the economy of any town, which is why we felt postponing the enhancements at Jubilee Walk was the best course of action to take. The improvements at this busy gateway into Haverhill will still go ahead, but not at a cost to the local community.”
As part of the enhancement project, an electronic board showing information to bus passengers will be installed along with several pieces of public artwork – including a sculpture to Owen, a popular cat who used to live in the area.
